Practical Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Drug Hypersensitivity: General Concepts

Comprehensive practical guidance for the evaluation and management of patients with drug allergy and hypersensitivity are lacking. This activity will support learners as they review the supplement of the same title, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice in October 2020. The supplement draws primarily from evidence-based published literature and incorporates experience from experts to fill current knowledge gaps related to drug allergy and hypersensitivity, and helping allergist/immunologists to expand their scope of practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Classify drug hypersensitivity reactions and identify risk factors associated with these reactions
  • Evaluate a patient presenting with drug hypersensitivity reactions and know the in vivo and in vitro diagnostic tools that are most appropriate for that patient
  • Identify the best approach to the management of a patient presenting with a history of a drug hypersensitivity reaction, including continued avoidance, graded challenge, desensitization, or direct delabeling.
