AAAAI Foundation and David S. Pearlman, MD, FAAAAI Lectureship: Contributing to Discovery and Education

The AAAAI Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the David S. Pearlman, MD FAAAAI Lectureship: Contributing to Discovery and Education. Dr. Pearlman’s distinguished career has featured nearly a thousand clinical trials, extensive publishing and outstanding patient care. He is truly a leader in the field.

Dr. Pearlman is a co-founder of Colorado Allergy and Asthma enters, which today serves over 48,000 patients. Since the clinic’s inception in 1972, Dr. Pearlman has been a principal investigator in the Denver Research location, with nearly a thousand clinical Phase I-IV pharmacotherapeutic trials. He has published over 150 articles and texts to inform physicians concerning advances in the field, and is the co-author of three editions of the textbook entitled Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology from Infancy to Adulthood.

Dr. Pearlman has been honored with the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology’s Distinguished Clinician Award and has received awards for outstanding contributions to the field of allergy and immunology by the American Board of Pediatrics, University of Colorado Medical School and the Joint Allergy and Asthma Task Force. He has served in leadership positions with the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and the Clinical Research Network.

Dr. Pearlman attended Cornell University and received his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Syracuse. He went on to train in pediatrics at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he also had a post-doctoral fellowship in immunology. After a fellowship in pharmacology at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, England, he returned to the University of Colorado Medical School as Director of Pediatric Allergy and Co-Director of the conjoint UCMS/National Jewish/NIH-funded conjoint fellowship in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.

Dr. Pearlman maintains an academic appointment at the University of Colorado Medical School as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. He continues to be active in allergy and asthma research authorships, critical reviewings and consulting.

Kathleen C. Barnes, PhD FAAAAI

the Division of Pulmonary Sciences & Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Epidemiology

Kathleen C. Barnes is a genetic epidemiologist with expertise in a variety of acute and chronic complex lung and allergic diseases.  She received her Ph.D. in biomedical anthropology at the University of Florida (1992) and completed a fellowship in immunogenetics (1993-1994) at the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center under the mentorship of the late David G. Marsh, after which she joined the faculty of the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology and the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine.

In 2015 she moved to the Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado, as Director of the newly launched Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, an institutional collaboration linking extensive electronic medical record (EMR) data to ‘omics’ information to promote the development of tools and knowledge in biomedical informatics.  Dr. Barnes is also the Head of the Division of Biomedical Informatics & Personalized Medicine in the Department of Medicine, and a faculty member of the Human Medical Genetics and Genomics Program, the Division of Pulmonary Sciences & Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Epidemiology.  For >25 years her population-based studies have focused on ethnically diverse, family-based and independent populations across the Americas, and she has led multiple multicenter, international genomics studies focused on underrepresented populations.
