Component Testing for Food Allergy Diagnosis

This interactive course outlines the shortcomings of the standard tests currently used to diagnose food allergy and explains the development and potential application of component resolved diagnosis (CRD). It describes, in depth, how CRD can be applied when evaluating potential allergies to plant (peanut and hazelnut) and animal (milk and eggs) products. The course also explains the limitations of CRD and makes suggestions for additional research.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of limitations in current standard allergy testing methods and how component-resolved diagnosis may be used in the diagnosis of some plant and animal-derived food allergies.
  • Apply CRD to the evaluation of peanut allergy
  • Apply CRD to the evaluation of hazelnut allergy
  • Differentiate between different phenotypes of milk and egg allergy using CRD
  • Identify current limitations of CRD in diagnosis of food allergy and foods for which clinical application is not yet recommended
