3002: Asthma in Older Adults: A Different Disease

Asthma in older adults is underdiagnosed, yet the prevalence rates are similar to other age groups. Mortality rates are much higher than any other age group. The intended audience has significant questions regarding the optimal assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of asthma in this population. Faculty will lead a discussion on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of asthma in the elderly. Particular attention will be paid to atypical signs/symptoms, the use of pulmonary function tests and skin tests, impact of asthma on quality of life, classes of asthma medications that might be particularly helpful or harmful (including biologic therapy), management of comorbidities, asthma/COPD overlap (ACO), and educational interventions. Three separate case vignettes will be used to highlight these concepts and stimulate discussion, and relevant literature and evidence will be presented. Time will be included for participants to ask and discuss any challenges they have experienced with management of older adults with asthma.
 

Credit claiming for this activity will be available through December 31, 2021. Requests to claim credit on or after January 1, 2022 will be subject to an administrative fee.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how asthma symptoms and spirometry may differ in older adults compared to younger populations
  • Identify how unique factors, including asthma/COPD overlap (ACO), are associated with poor asthma control and quality of life in older adults
  • Discuss the optimal pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management strategies for older adults with asthma
