Coding 101

Presented at the 2017 Practice Management Workshop, "Coding 101" covers the basic principles of medical coding and is designed specifically for FITs, new allergists and managers/administrators who have had minimal exposure to coding terminology and theory.

Learning Objectives

Needs Assessment
Coding and billing are not addressed during A/I fellowship training. This session aims to equip new allergists, fellows in training and practice managers new to the allergy specialty with the information necessary to effectively and appropriately code and bill for allergy procedures and services.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • List the three key components to determining the level of service of an allergy office visit and the appropriate code
  • Describe the difference between a new patient visit and a consultant and how to appropriately code for each
  • Describe the differences between a diagnosis code and an evaluation/management (E/M) code
