The Virtual Journal Club is a one-hour live webinar open to all AAAAI members that will focus on the newest clinically relevant content published in JACI: In Practice. Chronic urticaria and food intolerance are among the most common problems managed by allergist/immunologists, and both have different subtypes. Research regarding subtypes of both conditions is thus very relevant to the practice of our specialty. The first research article to be discussed showed that patients with the subtype of chronic urticaria associated with autoimmune disease had a particular pattern of clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic characteristics, and that a low serum IgE level is a potential biomarker for the presence of autoimmune disease in patients with chronic urticaria. The second article addressed the subtype of food intolerance known as “histamine intolerance” and showed that a single-blind, placebo controlled histamine challenge is safe and excluded histamine intolerance in the majority of patients, while histamine skin prick test wheal sizes did not discriminate patients with histamine intolerance from those without histamine intolerance, and serum diamine oxidase analysis was not specific enough for diagnosis. The thorough discussion of the strengths, limitations, and clinical applicability of these articles by experts in the field that is provided in the Virtual Journal Club format should allow the listener to use the information in these studies most appropriately in their clinical practice.

The January 24, 2024 webinar will focus on two journal articles:

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • To understand the effectiveness and safety of a single-blind, placebo-controlled histamine challenge compared to other tests in the evaluation of patients with suspected histamine intolerance (Title: Placebo-Controlled Histamine Challenge Disproves Suspicion of Histamine Intolerance)
