Virtual Patient: Young Girl with Peanut Allergy

This patient simulation involves a young girl with severe peanut allergy whose parents are interested in a desensitization treatment, like oral immunotherapy (OIT). During the consultation, her parents ask several questions about the administration, safety, efficacy, and effects of peanut/food oral immunotherapy. The findings from food OIT clinical trials will be referenced to answer these questions.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the current FDA approval status of food OIT treatments
  • Summarize findings from studies regarding administration, duration, safety, efficacy, and cross-reactivity of food OIT
  • Explain how desensitization is measured and how to minimize the risk of a reaction during OIT by avoiding so-called augmentation factors
