2016 Fall Teach Asthma Management (TAM) Basics, Plus and Masters

This is a live course that will take place on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in Milwaukee, WI.

Teach Asthma Management (TAM) Basics is an introduction to providing care to patients and families with asthma offered by Fight Asthma Milwaukee (FAM) Allies. Fight Asthma Milwaukee (FAM) Allies seeks to improve the lives of people affected by asthma through community partnerships, resources, services and education.  Sessions offered during TAM Basics include: Asthma 101, Asthma Medications, Environmental Triggers and Green Cleaning, Asthma Care Plans and Peak Flow Meters, Health Literacy and Devices for Asthma Management.

Teach Asthma Management (TAM) Plus is intended to provide additional education and topics to those covered in TAM Basics. We encourage participants to attend TAM Basics before enrolling in TAM Plus. Sessions offered during TAM Plus include: NAEPP Asthma Guidelines and case studies, The Evolution of Asthma Care and Diagnostic Testing.

Teach Asthma Management (TAM) Masters is geared toward prescribers who manage asthma.  We will cover the NAEPP Asthma Guidelines, Personalized Medicine, Asthma Phenotypes, Case Studies with a panel of multidisciplinary health care professionals, and a Problem Based Learning session.

There are no group registrations. Each person must register under his or her own account (paid membership is not required--accounts are free), and accounts must be set up using unique email addresses. If groups wish to make a single payment, individuals must all register separately and select the option to pay by check when they check out. Physicians can earn up to 3.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
Nurses can earn up to 3.50 contact hours.

Credit must be claimed by June 30, 2017. Credit requests made on or after July 1, 2017 will be subject to an administrative fee.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

TAM Basics

  • discuss the differential diagnosis, comorbid and co-existing conditions in patients with asthma
  • describe treatments options including medications for patients with asthma
  • demonstrate proper use of devices and tools for asthma (care plans, peak flow meters, inhalers, spacers, nebulizers)
  • explain methods for trigger avoidance
  • describe the importance of  providing information to families at a basic level to facilitate better understanding

TAM Plus

  • describe how to classify asthma severity, risk and control based on the 2007 ashtma guidelines
  • explain how to evaluate the acceptability of a spirometry test result
  • discuss how the treatment of asthma has changed based on landmark studies
  • describe how to engage families in shared decision making

TAM Masters

  • describe how to classify asthma severity, risk and control based on the 2007 ashtma guidelines
  • discuss how the patient specific asthma phenotype affects development of personalized treatment plans
  • explain how multidisciplinary approach to patient care affects asthma outcomes
  • apply personalized medicine and knowledge of the asthma guidelines to clinical problems
