This workshop will review ways to identify poor breathing biomechanics and patterns of dysfunctional breathing through postural assessments, as well as provide an overview of the fundamentals of inspiratory muscle training, diaphragmatic breathing and methods to instruct athletes on correct breathing techniques. The session will also address how the combination of posture and run mechanics can exacerbate poor breathing technique and explore the relationship between breathing and mental toughness, particularly as it relates to asthma and vocal cord dysfunction (VCD). Participants will observe usable skills that can be brought into the office setting for introduction to patients.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Critically analyze the medical literature on the effects of inspiratory muscle training and other complementary treatments on lung function, inspiratory endurance and functional capacity in patients with asthma
- Review how to conduct postural and breathing assessments for athletes, especially with asthma, and how to coach on proper breathing techniques
- Integrate mental skills assessment and mental skills training as part of a multi-modal approach to proper breathing in asthmatic athletes
