Module 3: Factors Affecting Asthma Control and Outcomes During Pregnancy
The goal of asthma management in pregnancy is to achieve asthma control and prevent exacerbations. Asthma is a heterogenous disease, and is made complex by the myriad of factors that affect asthma control and outcomes during pregnancy. These include co-morbidities, asthma triggers and behaviors, collectively known as “treatable traits”.
Section one introduces the treatable traits framework, with an emphasis on extra‑pulmonary traits (co‑morbidities) such as obesity, rhinitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as behavioral traits including cigarette smoking, medication adherence and inhaler technique. Section two examines the social determinants of health and health disparities, highlighting their impact on outcomes for pregnant women with asthma. Section three addresses physician undertreatment and outlines recommendations for a multidisciplinary approach and coordinated care during pregnancy.
