Dancing with the Devil: Negotiating Managed Care Contracts

Negotiating contracts with managed care companies is a necessary evil for allergy practices. "Dancing with the Devil: Negotiating Managed Care Contracts," recorded from the 2017 Practice Management Workshop, will show you how to successfully negotiate these contracts using tips from a former managed care negotiator. You’ll learn how to evaluate the positions of both sides and develop the best course of action for your practice.

Target Audience

Allergist/immunologists
Physician assistants
Nurses
Fellows-in-training
Office managers
Coding and billing staff members
Other clinical staff

Learning Objectives

Needs Assessment
All medical practices are forced to negotiate with managed care companies in order to gain access to patient panels. Contract negotiation is not a skill taught in resident or fellowship training, and yet it is necessary to ensure a thriving practice. This session will walk participants through the entire negotiation process from beginning to end and show how to effectively deal with a practice’s managed care relationships.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Learn how to evaluate both positions in the contract negotiation process
  • Describe the importance of a payer fee schedule and master fee schedule for the medical practice and how knowing the payer mix can help in the contract negotiation process
  • More fully understand all elements of the negotiation process
