Asthma impacts up to 13% of pregnancies globally and is a significant public health issue. There are challenges to diagnosing asthma during pregnancy and the course can be variable. There is a known association between asthma and mental health concerns. Asthma increases risk for depression which further leads to poor asthma control, increased exacerbations and quality of life. However, this link needs to be further examined in pregnant people with asthma. This module will highlight key pearls in the diagnosis of asthma in pregnancy, provide tools available for diagnosis, identify specific risk factors for morbidity and mortality related to asthma in pregnancy and discuss the disparities in perinatal mental health care and its possible impact on asthma.
